Former champions Madhya Pradesh continued to trail fellow former champions Bengal by a massive 456 runs, at stumps on Day 2 of Round 9 of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17 at the Palam A Stadium in Delhi on Thursday. Earlier, Bengal batted first, as they posted a mammmoth total of 475 for the loss of 9 wickets, courtesy of Shreevats Goswami’s brilliant innings of 225, and Abhimanyu Easwaran’s 80. The MP bowlers had a tough job restricting the Bengal batsmen, as Puneet Datey and Chandrakant Sakure claimed 4 and 3 wickets each. Currently, MP are 19 for the loss of a wicket, with Aditya Shrivastava being the only man to be dismissed.

Goswami, who mostly hid under the shadow of Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, finally managed to come out of the shadow, as he hit his career-best knock of 225. H played 328 balls, while he managed to smash 25 boundaries, and three sixes, along with a strike rate of 69. It was also his maiden double ton in First-Class cricket. The lower batting order of Bengal too provided some fightback, as after struggling at 207 for the loss of 7 wickets, the remaining 3 wickets contributed crucial 268 runs, thus allowing Bengal to reach the respectable and the mammoth total in their opening innings, as they look well set at the end of Day 2.

Shreevats also added 119 runs along with the final, No.11 batsman Sayan Ghosh for the 10th wicket, as a result, breaking a 77-year old record between B Malcolm and TS Bhattacharjee, a 115-run stand versus Madras (now Chennai) during the 1938-39 season of the tournament.

Brief Scores:

Bengal 475 for 9 decl (Shreevats Goswami 225, Abhimanyu Easwaran 80; Puneet Datey 4 for 105, Chandrakant Sakure 3 for 105) lead Madhya Pradesh 19 for 1 (Rajat Patidar 13; Ashok Dinda 1 for 4) by 456 runs.
