Hyderabad escaped with a draw against Andhra in Round 9 of the Ranji Trophy 2016-17, after ending the final day at 56 for 5, while chasing 219 for a win. Paidikalva Vijaykumar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 13 in his 19 overs. Hyderabad started the day on 13 for 1, needing 206-runsfor a win. Due to bad weather, we could not get a full day’s play and as a result only 47 overs were bowled in the fourth innings. With this game concluding a draw, Hyderabad have done just enough to make it to the quarter-finals. They conceded the first innings lead, but Andhra needed an outright win to have a chance to make it to the next round.
On Day Three, Andhra declared at 171 for 6, with skipper Hanuma Vihari getting a valuable fifty, to set Hyderabad a competitive target. Andhra managed to get 190 in the first innings, with Pranith Manyala and Ashwin Hebbar both scoring half-centuries. Chama Milind picked up five wickets for Hyderabad and his opening partner Ravi Kiran chipped in with 4 wickets. Hyderabad should have ideally wiped off the deficit, but fell 47 runs short of Andhra’s first innings total. Vijaykumar was once again the star of the show with 4 wickets to his name. Andhra got their runs at a quick pace as they were the ones, who had to get maximum points to progress. Hyderabad somehow showed enough resistance and booked their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
On Day One, it was Hyderabad, who won the toss and elected to bowl first. Hyderabad have topped Group C with 31 points, Andhra, on the other hand, narrowly missed out on finishing with 28 points eventually.
