Mumbai reached 227 for 4 following-on as Punjab were able to earn three points after the end of their Group A match in the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Ground in Rajkot. Punjab, batting first, scored 468, and Mumbai replied with a paltry 185 for 9, which helped their opponents take a massive lead of 283 runs. In their second innings, Mumbai reached 227 for 4 on the fourth day when the sides decided to call off the game. Despite earning only one point from the game, Mumbai were able to advance to the quarter-final round.
The 40-times Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai remained on the back foot right from the beginning. Mayank Sidhana scored 115, Uday Kaul managed 86, and Mandeep Singh scored 78 whereas Gurkeerat Singh Mann missed out on a deserving century when he was dismissed for 93. Suryakumar Yadav was the most successful bowler for Mumbai as he returned with the figures of 19-2-47-4. Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande both claimed two wickets each. In their reply, Mumbai produced an ordinary show with the bat as they were restricted to 185 for 9, with Sufian Shaikh and Shardul getting 67 and 70 respectively to boost their side to a respectable total.
In their second innings, Mumbai were bolstered by a fine 123-run innings from Shreyas Iyer. The young batsman struck 14 boundaries and a six to solidify his team’s innings. His innings was the only bright spot as the others got starts but failed to convert them. Rajwinder Golu claimed and Siddharth Kaul claimed 2 wickets each for Punjab.
