Mumbai registered a comprehensive victory by an innings and 127 runs over Saurashtra to win the Ranji Trophy final on Monday.
Dhaval Kulkarni starred for the home side with five wickets in the second innings to run through the Saurashtra batting line-up. He ended the innings with the figures of five for 32 while captain Ajit Agarkar finished with four for 15.

Earlier, Mumbai were just three wickets away from their 40th Ranji Trophy title as Saurashtra’s batting order collapsed in the first session on Day Three with the visitors struggling at 39 for seven after bowling out Mumbai for 355 in the Ranji Trophy final at Wankhede.

Saurashtra were reeling at 20 for six in their second essay. Mumbai captain Ajit Agarkar and Kulkarni, who picked up four wickets in the first innings, wrecked havoc on Saurashtra’s batting line-up as they dismissed five batsmen and reduced the visitors to 20 for six, picking up three wickets each.

Saurashtra struck early on the third morning to send Dhawal Kulkarni (18) back to the pavilion to reduce Mumbai to 288 for seven.

Ankeet Chavan joined Hiken Shah (52 not out) in the middle as the latter brought up his half century to take the home side’s lead to

Earlier, Mumbai were in driver’s seat after Wasim Jaffer’s sublime century took Mumbai to 287 for six at stumps on Day Two of the Ranji Trophy final against Saurashtra. The visitors need quick wickets on Day Three to try and steer the momentum on their side.

Jaffer’s 132 came off 246 balls, taking him past Amol Mazumdar’s record tally of (9,105) runs scored in the Ranji Trophy.

However, Jaffer enjoyed three lives — two umpiring errors and one by the wicketkeeper. In the end, he was undone by a poor lbw decision from umpire K Hariharan.

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar (22) fell to a run out for the first time in the Ranji Trophy

At close of play, Shah was batting along with Kulkarni.

Mumbai have an imposing lead and Saurashtra need to play out of their skins on Day Three to make a match of this final.

Day three will be crucial for the visitors who desperately need to bowl out Mumbai as soon as possible and wipe out the deficit.

For starters, early wickets will do them a world of good as Shah is slowly but steadily beginning to settle down and poise himself for a big innings. They need to get rid of him and the tail in no time to get a grip on this game.

Brief Scores: Saurashtra 148 and 39 for 7 (Saurya Sanandiya 8*; Ajit Agarkar 3 for 15, Dhaval Kulkarni 3 for 13) trail Mumbai 326 for 7 (Wasim Jaffer 132, Hiken Shah 53*) by 168 runs.
