Rashid Khan (34 runs in 10 balls) lifted Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to 174 for 7 in 20 overs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2018 Qualifier 2 at Eden Gardens despite superlative performances from KKR spinners. Rashid launched a furious assault to take SRH to a competitive total in an otherwise forgetful batting show. He and Bhuvneshwar Kumar added an unbeaten stand of 36 off 11 balls for the eighth wicket to give SRH a chance. KKR spinners Sunil Narine (4-0-24-1), Kuldeep Yadav (4-0-29-2) and Piyush Chawla (3-0-22-1) had 4 for 75 from 11 overs. Earlier, Shivam Mavi, making a comeback, started off brilliantly.

SRH were off to a fidgety start. Wriddhiman Saha, who was returning to the XI after a while, struggled against the pace of Mavi. Saha got a lucky reprieve when he mishit and Dinesh Karthik made a mess of the high catch. SRH managed just 3 boundaries in the first 4 overs, a six and 2 fours off Dhawan’s bat.

Saha made the most of the drop and found 2 fours off the fifth over by Mavi. KKR introduced spin and Sunil Narine started with a 5-run over as SRH posted 45 for no loss after the Powerplay. Dhawan smacked 2 fours and plundered 10 in the following over from Piyush Chawla.

Just when it seemed that SRH were gaining an upper hand in the contest, Dinesh Karthik’s bowling change worked. Dhawan was trapped plumb off the first ball from Kuldeep. Four balls later Kuldeep struck again, this time bagging the big fish, Orange Cap holder Kane Williamson, deceived by a googly. A tossed-up ball drew Williamson forward for a drive, took his outside edge and Karthik completed a sharp catch.

The well-set Saha swept Kuldeep for 2 fours in the 10th over. The partnership between Saha and Shakib Al Hasan was beginning to threaten when the former got out to Chawla. Saha missed a googly that drifted down leg and grazed the pad. Thinking the ball had gone past the ‘keeper, Saha set off for a run only to realise that Karthik had stumped him. The only doubt was if Karthik had the ball in his glove when he got the bails off. After several replays, the third umpire was convinced.

SRH seemed to be running out of luck. Shakib was beginning to look good when a full-blooded straight drive from Deepak Hooda grazed Kuldeep’s fingers on the way to non-strikers’ stumps and Shakib had taken the start.

Hooda took out his frustration on Kuldeep, lofting him for six next ball, but his scratchy knock came to an end in the following over, from Narine. He perished miscuing a reverse-sweep and ended Narine’s wicket drought, which almost extended to 2 matches.

Carlos Brathwaite was run out to a brilliant piece of fielding from Nitish Rana. Yusuf Pathan was soon dismissed trying to hit out Mavi. SRH were 138 for 7 in the 18th over when the Rashid show began.

The rest of the innings went 060064146wide26. Rashid struck 4 sixes and Prasidh Krishna finished with 4-0-56-0.

Kolkata earlier elected to bowl and Hyderabad pulled off surprises at the toss. Williamson announced that they had made three changes. The in-form Shreevats Goswami, a local lad, made way for another local, Saha. SRH also dropped Manish Pandey and Sandeep Sharma in favour of Hooda and debutant Khaleel Ahmed. Kolkata went ahead with only three foreign players, sensibly replacing Javon Searles with Mavi.
