Ravichandran Ashwin has become the fastest India to record 50 wickets in Test matches as he overhauled the milestone in his ninth game. He achieved it when he dismissed the England opener Nick Compton on the second day of the first Test at Ahmedabad.

The previous record holder for India was Anil Kumble – who took 10 matches to complete the milestone. With this achievement, Ashwin is tied with the likes of Stuart MacGill, Colin Croft and Andy Roberts to name a few on the overall list.

Here is a list of the ten fastest bowlers to 50 Test wickets for India:

Ravichandran Ashwin

Anil Kumble

Narendra Hirwani

Harbhajan Singh

Subhash Gupte

Bhagwat Chandrasekar

Erapalli Prasanna

Venkatesh Prasad

Pragyan Ojha

Ghulam Ahmed

This list makes a very interesting reading as one would realise that it is dominated by spinners. Nine out of the ten are tweakers, while Venkatesh Prasad is the only fast-bowler in this list as he took 13 matches to pick 50 Test wickets.

Ashwin has been very prolific at home since his debut against the West Indies last year. In partnership with Pragyan Ojha, he has been a force to reckon with in Indian conditions and the touring teams would be wary of them.
