Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has become the first international player to sign up for the Caribbean Premier League. Ponting has been in good form in the Sheffield Shield with a couple of centuries and a double ton.
The 38-year-old, who retired from international cricket last December has also signed up to play for Surrey for the first two months of the county season and then travel to West Indies for the T20 league. Ponting was also recently named as the captain of his Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai Indians.
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will benefit from Ponting’s presence as they look to match up to the success of the IPL and Australia’s Big Bash League.
“The West Indies has always been one of my favourite cricket destinations. The mix of entertainment and cricket is the perfect recipe for West Indian cricket fans as well as the rest of the world,” Ponting said, as reported by NDTV.
The likes of Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Darren Sammy, Kieron Pollard,Dwayne Bravo and Marlon Samuels have already committed to the CPL.
