Mumbai: Feb 6, 2013
Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting exchanged text messages with Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar after being picked by the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction held on Sunday.
“I sent him a message as soon as the auction was over just to say I’m looking forward to playing with him,” Ponting was quoted as saying by news.com.au.
Ponting said that it will great fun to play alongside Tendulkar in the T20 tournament.
“He sent a message straight back saying the same thing.
“It will be great fun for us to play together. We’ve played a lot against each other over the years and spent a little bit of time together off the field. I think I can still learn a fair bit from him as well. Hopefully he might even learn a few things off me,” he said.
Ponting retired from international cricket last year. However, he participated in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) with fair amount of success.
”I never really felt that I’d got into the momentum of the game and I felt I did that this year with the Hurricanes and really enjoyed it,” he said.
“I felt like, coming away, I had a really good grasp on how I needed to play to be a good Twenty20 player.”
The former Australian captain says he’s still undecided about whether he’ll play more domestic and T20 cricket next season.
“I really enjoyed the Big Bash and you enjoy a day like today,” the 38-year-old said.
“No doubt I’ll enjoy the IPL,” he added.
“But the thought of another pre-season’s not overly exciting,” Ponting concluded.
