A Sachin Tendulkar image taken during his final Test innings has won the Wisden-MCC Photo of the Year award for 2013. The photo was taken by Mid-Day Media photographer Atul Kamble as Tendulkar was about to walk out to bat for the last time in Test cricket on November 15, 2013.
That was Tendulkar’s 200th Test. It was played in his hometown Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium against West Indies. The photo shows Tendulkar just about to come down the steps at the stadium as fans clamour to get a glimpse and try to take a photo.
Kamble’s photo was selected as the winner from a shortlist of 11 images. The shortlist was made after almost 500 entries were submitted by many professional and amateur photographers from all over the world. The panel which decided the winning photo included Chris Smith, Nigel Davies, Patrick Eagar, Hugh Routledge and Eileen Langsley.
Tendulkar scored 74 in his final Test innings in front of a packed Mumbai crowd. He was dismissed by Narsingh Deonarine as West Indies captain Darren Sammy took a sharp catch at slip. India won the match by an innings and 126 runs and won the two-match Test series 2-0. Tendulkar got a heroic send-off after the end of the match.
