Former Sri Lankan batting lynchpin Sanath Jayasuriya celebrates his 45th birthday on Monday. Jayasuriya, who is currently the chief selector of Sri Lanka, had an illustrious career in all three forms of cricket.
A destructive opening batsman and handy left-arm spinner, Jayasuriya made his ODI debut in the same year as Sachin Tendulkar, and is possibly as iconic a figure in his country as Tendulkar is in India. He retired from all formats of the game in 2011, having played 445 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), 110 Tests and 31 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He scored over 21,000 international runs, and took exactly 440 wickets in his career.
Jayasuriya now serves Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as its chief selector, and is a very well-respected figure in the international circuit.
