Now that his selection days are over, former Indian cricketer and ex-chairman of national selection committee in Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sandeep Patil has been making some shocking revelations. The word ‘drop’ and ‘Sachin Tendulkar‘ are not usually heard in the same sentence but Patil mentioned that he would have dropped the legendary Indian batsman from the One-Day International (ODI) side, had he not announced is retirement. Now, he opened up on MS Dhoni. Patil is currently not the part of selection panel in BCCI and probably that is the reason he is able to reveal these things very frankly to media.

Although, he accepted the fact that certain aspects should not revealed, he still has shared several insights. It is a known fact that Dhoni has been going through with some tough days as captain in ODIs. After announcing his retirement from Tests, he led the side in the Tri-Series in Australia, where India could not register a single win and after that it was 2015 World Cup. Patil said the selection panel was ready to release Dhoni from the burden of captaincy in ODI. “Of course, we had a brief discussion about it (removing Dhoni from captaincy) on a few occasions. We wanted to experiment by handing the baton (to somebody) but we thought the time was not right with World Cup (2015) round the corner,” Patil said to ABP News.

Further, Patil also explained on why Dhoni was remained the captain of the side in 2015 World Cup and said, “We felt that new captain should be given some time to set things right. Keeping that in mind in the World Cup, we had gone with Dhoni.”

Talking about Virat Kohli’s captaincy, Patil believes that he was given this responsibility at the right time by saying, “I believe Virat got the captaincy at the right time. Virat can lead the team in shorter formats as well but that decision rests with the new selection committee.”

Patil also spoke about Dhoni’s retirement from Test cricket, which was very ‘shocking’ for him and said, “It was a very tough series. I will not say Dhoni was captain of a sinking ship but things quite did not move in our favour. And in this backdrop, one of your senior players decides to retire. That was shocking but at the end of the day, it was his (Dhoni’s) personal decision.”
