It was Sandeep Patil who had discovered Gautam Gambhir from NCA camp in 2004 during his India A days. Since them Gambhir had moved on to bigger things, earning laurels for India. Ever since 2004, Gambhir had been in constant touch with Patil over phone and had continued to grow as player across formats. However, the relationship turned sour when Gambhir was dropped from the Indian side some time in 2012-13. In his column for Quint, Patil wrote: “I can easily say that it was because of his so-called attitude that he made it to the Indian team, but the very same so-called attitude was also the reason that he got dropped from the team. It was due to his ‘angry young man’ attitude that I nicknamed him the Amitabh Bachchan of Indian cricket.”

Patil goes on to reveal that his and Gambhir’s friendship ended once he, as Chairman of Selectors, decided to drop him during India’s 2012-13 home series against England: “I was the chairman of the Selection Committee at the time and we selectors decided to give Dhawan a chance in place of a struggling Gambhir. Later on, all doors were shut for Gambhir as Murali Vijay too was performing excellently as an opener. That was the time Gambhir decided to end our friendship.”

He further adds, “I am not saying Gambhir should have tried to flatter us and the team management, but a better attitude would have helped. After being dropped from the Indian team, whenever I saw Gautam Gambhir from a distance, all the glow on the face was missing. I could sense a storm inside him.”
