Sanjay Manjrekar records Tagore song for Bengali album

His love for music is well-known and has sung on numerous occasions.

Cricketers are often seen donning different hats; they often love to flirt with dance and music and have done a good job in their new role. On this occasion, former Indian cricketer and a renowned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has recorded a Bengali song for a film. His love for music is well-known and has sung on numerous occasions. He has a melodious voice and has been astute in his approach. As per a series of tweets from Manjrekar’s official Twitter account, it can be learnt that he has recorded a Bengali song for a film, and was certainly ecstatic about it. What made him happy was the fact that it was from Rabindra Sangeet, which is his favourite.

It’s a proud moment for him and he has expressed his glee on the micro blogging site. Manjrekar, these days is busy commentating and has done a good job after his playing days are over. The right-handed batsman featured in 37 Tests and 74 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in which he amassed 2043 and 1994 runs respectively. He was one of the most dependent batsmen from his era and now commenced a new innings on a new platform. Manjrekar is going to launch his first new audio album prior to Durga Puja.

Manjrekar was quoted in a report from oneinda.com saying, “I used to sing songs regularly during my playing days whenever I used to get time in between the matches. My colleagues in the dressing room also used to like my songs. So, singing has been my habit for long time.”

Manjrekar also credited former Pakistani cricketer Rameez Raja and said, “Manjrekar added, “When I joined commentary team later after having retired from cricket, Ramiz was my mate in most of the matches. And he was the man to have inspired me to take singing seriously. He also can sing well. Then I thought seriously about it.”

He recorded with renowned singer Usha Uthup and the latter praised Manjrekar by saying, “Usha Uthup also had praise for Manjrekar on the issue. She said, “He has a knack for singing and he is also talented. So, I have belief that he will also prosper if he becomes a professional singer in future.”

In another tweet, he wrote about the hard work he has put behind this and wrote, “One of the happiest day of my life. A dream fulfilled. To sing Rabindrasangeet in bengali. Put in the hours (years) before recording it.”

Manjrekar thanked a fan and wrote about the theory of practice. He wrote “Thanks mate. I put the 10,000 hours theory into practice on this one.”

Manjrekar also gave credit to Srabani Sen for her guidance and wrote, “Was guided by none other than Srabani Sen, renowned exponent of Rabindra Sangeet. She approved the takes.”

 

It would come as a surprise to many but Manjrekar can’t speak Bengali but he can sing in the same language. As his tweet suggests, “Can only sing Bangla. Can’t talk Bangla.”
