Shane Warne has revealed a team of what he believes would make the greatest Australia One-Day International (ODI) team, selecting players over a span of the last 25 years. Notably, his team excludes close friend Michael Clarke in favour of Mike Hussey in the number four spot. His list also excludes Matthew Hayden at the top of the order in favour Mark Waugh to open with Adam Gilchrist. At one down he chooses Ricky Ponting, for whom he has had harsh words to say in the past. His pick for No. 5 is Allan Border who is also his choice for captain. Warne believes Michael Bevan, reputed for his finishing skills, to be best suited in the No. 6 position followed by controversial all-rounder Andrew Symonds at No. 7. His bowling battery seems a formidable one consisting of Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath apart from himself.
Warne clarifies that he found the No. 4 position the toughest call and explained that Clarke, Damien Martyn and Darren Lehmann were only marginally edged out by Mr Cricket, Mike Hussey. “The number 4 spot was a toughest decision, but I think Hussey just wins it over Damien Martyn, Darren Lehman & Michael Clarke,” wrote Warne.
Warne lays emphasis on the fact that almost everyone in the team can bowl to varying capacities. “Looking at this team, everyone bowls too,” wrote Warne.
Shane Warne’s all-Australian dream ODI XI: Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Alan Border (c), Michael Bevan, Andrew Symonds, Mitchell Johnson, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath
