Shikhar Dhawan has registered the highest score by an Indian on Test debut during his belligerent knock in the third Test against Australia at Mohali.

Earlier, Dhawan became the 13th Indian batsman to score a hundred on debut. He also broke the record of the fastest century by a debutant in the history of the game — breaking West Indian Dwayne Smith’s record of 93 deliveries to score the ton.

The previous highest score by an Indian on Test debut was by Gundappa Viswanath, who scored 137 against Australia at Kanpur in 1969-70. Dhawan achieved the milestone when he smashed a boundary off Nathan Lyon when on 136.

Here is a list of the Indian batsmen who scored a hundred on Test debut:

 Player Year Score
Lala Amarnath 1933 118
Deepak Shodhan 1952 110
AG Kripal Singh 1955 100*
Abbas Ali Baig 1959 112

**Shikhar Dhawan 2013 185*

** Match still in progress. Dhawan is still unbeaten at Mohali at the time of writing this report, and it remains to be seen how far he will go.

Dhawan has also registered sixth highest score by a debutant in Test history. He finished the day unbeaten on 185.

Here is a list of the highest scores on Test debut:

Batsman Year Score
Reg Foster 1903 287
