Shreyas Iyer is unarguably one of the most talented youngsters in the Indian domestic scene. The 20-year-old, representing Mumbai, is enjoying a fantastic run in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2015-16 season wherein he has amassed an astonishing 781 runs from just nine innings at an average of 86.77 with three hundreds, including a double hundred against his name. Iyer is touted to be the next big thing in Indian cricket and is already showing signs of fulfilling that tag with the Mumbai team. His efforts with Mumbai were recognised when he was selected by the Delhi Daredevils side to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a whopping 2.6 crore.
The seeds of Iyer’s interest in cricket were planted at a tender age of four, which according to his parents was the first time he picked a bat. Realising his unreal talent and passion for the sport, his parents encouraged him to pursue cricket at the top-most level. Iyer flourished under the coaching of Pravin Amre at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana.
Iyer’s run to success however was not always free-flowing. He underwent a lot of lean patches in age group cricket but kept battling it out and received the backing of coaches who witnessed in him a natural flair that needed some time and patience to flourish. Iyer had an issue of going for over-the-top aggressive shots early in his career but has matured with time and ironed out those chinks while retaining his natural flair. As it stands now, Iyer is certainly on the path to achieving great laurels for his country.
