Few cricketers have won India more games than MS Dhoni. But the seasoned campaigner has been battling questions on his form, especially post the West Indies series. The former captain shunned everyone with his match-winning knock against Australia in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Chennai. However, his predecessor, Sourav Ganguly gives a fair share of credit for his knock to India captain Virat Kohli. Ganguly mentioned, it is Kohli’s faith on Dhoni, which encouraged him to come forward and play like he did on Sunday. Thanks to Dhoni’s anchoring role, India, despite a primary batting collapse, won the rain-curtailed match to lead the five match series 1-0. “When players play for so long, MS has played over 300 ODIs for India, they know how to get runs,” Ganguly told India Today. “More than 9,000 runs for Dhoni in one-day cricket and he’ll get a few more by the time he finishes. It’s the captain’s confidence and Virat should get a lot of credit for it because he’s put a lot of faith in Dhoni and that allowed MS to play the way he wanted. Players are made and players are broken by the faith you show in them. And I think Virat Kohli is responsible for what we are seeing of MS Dhoni today.”
India will head to Ganguly’s hometown, Kolkata to face Australia in the second ODI on Thursday. Currently, Ganguly, now the President of Cricket Association of Bengali (CAB) is battling rains to ensure the ODI takes place.
