Lionel Messi shook the Monday morning of the football fraternity and fans across the globe when he announced international retirement following Argentina’s defeat to Chile in the Centenario Copa America 2016. After being goalless for 120 minutes, the match was decided via penalty shootout, which was won 4-2 by Chile. Amongst the fans and various football players, there were India cricketers who were shocked and surprised by Messi’s instant decision to retire. Some disagreed on quitting to play for the national side. The ones who expressed their thoughts on were Sourav Ganguly, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan and Harsha Bhogle. Ganguly said, “I am surprised with his decision. I think the AFA is going to discuss it with him. Raina also said, “Sad day for football lovers We Will Miss You Messi #JersyNo10 #Messi #HeartOftheGame.” Dhawan was also upset on Messi’s retirement and mentioned, “Congratulations!! You have been an inspiration to an entire generation #Messi.” While Bhogle tweeted that went something like, not everyone gets what they want. On the other hand, Tuesday saw another shocking exit of England from Euro 2016 that many were not expecting after Iceland took the lead by 1-2. Bhogle expressed his views on this as well as he was not surprised to find England eliminated from the tournament. Meanwhile, Messi spoke to the media after his side lost the game and said, “The National team is over for me. It’s my decision. it hurts not to be a champion.” Messi has lost three finals with Argentina in the last three years (Copa America 2015, 2016 and FIFA World Cup 2014). Messi retires from international football without any major trophy.”
Argentina dominated throughout the tournament with Messi on a goal spree. The Barcelona forward scored five goals in this Copa America tournament – one behind the leader Eduardo Vargas – despite not starting the first two games. It was a historic win indeed for Chile winning against a huge contender in Copa America.
