South Africa make early inroads after imposing follow-on vs Sri Lanka at Johannesburg, 3rd Test
South African pacers put up a collective performance to inch closer to an innings victory over Sri Lanka to bowl them out of 131 in the first innings to enforce the follow-on.
Sri Lanka reached 13 for 1 following-on at lunch on Day Three of the second Test at Johannesburg against South Africa. Initially, Sri Lanka were cleaned up for a paltry 131 in their first innings, in their bid to surpass the total of 426 amassed by the hosts. South Africa decided to enforce the follow-on after they finished the first innings with a healthy lead of 295 runs. South African pacers Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada shared 3 wickets each while debutant Duanne Olivier and Dwayne Parnell took 2 to dismiss the Angelo Mathews-led side. The hosts’ bowling unit gave no quarter to the Sri Lankan batsmen, who once again produced a miserable show with the bat.
Resuming from the overnight score of 80 for 4, Sri Lanka had their captain Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal at the crease. Philander and Rabada, who started off with the Day Three proceedings, tormented the Sri Lankan batting since the very first ball. With a lot of swing and bounce on offer, the tourists had no answer whatsoever as the pacers were managing to get the batsmen nick the outgoing deliveries at regular intervals.
The tumbling of wickets started with Chandimal (5) being the first of the lot. Soon, the hosts’ bowling unit capitalised on the breakthrough and kept on getting wickets at regular intervals. Mathews (19), Rangana Herath (8), Suranga Lakmal (4), Nuwan Pradeep (4) perished one after the other offering no resistance at all. Off the six Sri Lankan batsmen dismissed in the first innings, Kusal Mendis was the highest scorer with 41 with Upul Tharanga making 24.\
As the Sri Lankan innings ended, Faf du Plessis decided to enforce a follow-on as his bowlers were on song and they had a healthy lead of 295 runs. The woes for Sri Lanka continued in their second innings too, as their opener Kaushal Silva as dismissed for a first-ball duck off Rabada. Sri Lanka still trails by 282 runs and they will need to dig deep in their ranks and come out with the special performance to turn the tide.
Brief scores:
South Africa 426 (JP Duminy 155, Hashim Amla 134; Nuwan Pradeep 4 for 78) lead Sri Lanka 131 (Kusal Mendis 41, Upul Tharanga 24; Vernon Philander 3 for 28) and 13 for 1 (Dimuth Karunaratne 8*, Kusal Mendis 5*; Kagiso Rabada 1 for 4) by 282 runs.
