Sri Lanka pick rookie spinner for T20 World Cup

Sri Lankan selectors on Thursday included an 18 year old off-spinner Akila Dananjaya Perera in the 15-man squad to play in the World T20 which is to be hosted by Sri Lanka.

 

The right arm spinner from the south Colombo suburb of Panadura was hand-picked by captain Mahela Jayawardene who was impressed by the youngster’s variation in spin.

 

Perera plays for the Wayamba franchise in the on-going Sri Lanka Premier League, captained by Jayawardene.

 

He has bagged seven wickets in just 4 games for Wayamba including a spell of 3 for 18 in the last outing Ajantha Mendis a fellow off spinner makes a comeback to the Sri Lanka team after a long absence.

 

His last appearance was against South Africa in January.

 

Dilshan Munaweera, a 23 year old right handed opening batsman and off spinner finds a place after consistent performances in domestic cricket. (PTI)
