Sri Lanka successfully chased down a target of 99 against Pakistan at Galle to win the first Test by seven wickets. With the clouds hovering around the Galle International Stadium, Sri Lanka fought it out and kept Pakistan at bay to seal a memorable victory. Pakistan had set them a target of 99 with only 21 overs left in the day and Sri Lanka managed to get it with more than four overs to spare.

For any target of over 50 runs, Sri Lanka recorded their second fastest run-chase in their Test history. Their fastest run-chase also came at Galle, against India in 2010 when they chased down 96 in 14.1 overs. That Test was Muttiah Muralitharan’s last. The recently concluded Test against Pakistan is Mahela Jayawardene’s last at Galle.

Here is a list of Sri Lanka’s quickest successful run-chases in Test cricket:

Opposition Venue R Ov Run Rate Year
India Galle 96/0 14.1 6.77 2010
Pakistan Galle 99/3 16.2 6.07 2014
Pakistan Colombo 171/3 31.5 5.37 2009
New Zealand Galle 93/0 18.3 5.02 2012
New Zealand Colombo 73/1 14.4 4.97 1992
West Indies Colombo 172/4 38.3 4.46 2005
Bangladesh Chittagong 163/2 37 4.4 2006

(Qualification: Target of over 50)
