New South Wales on Tuesday won their first Sheffield Shield crown since 2008 with Australian international Steven Smith hitting an unbeaten century as the match against Western Australia finished in stalemate.
The Blues only needed a draw to seal the title in the five-day final. They were in command of the match after scoring 447 in their first innings before dismissing the Warriors for 180.
NSW reached 197 for four in their second innings on the final day in Canberra, with Smith unbeaten on 103, ending WA’s hopes of a first title since 1999. Most of day four was washed out.
New South Wales 447 (Moises Henriques 140, Steven Smith 75; Jason Behrendorff 4 for 95, Michael Hogan 3 for 78) and 197 for 4 (Steven Smith 103*, Kurtis Patterson 52) drew with Western Australia 180 (Mitchell Marsh 92*, Shaun Marsh 40; Josh Hazlewood 6 for 50).
