Amidst England’s emphatic victory over West Indies at Edgbaston in the hosts’ first day-night Test match, paceman Stuart Broad achieved new heights as he surpassed Ian Botham to become England’s second most successful bowler in Tests, after teammate James Anderson. With 379 wickets before the match, Broad bagged 2 wickets in the second innings and 3 in the third to go past Botham’s 383 to earn the second spot in the prestigious list. James Anderson bagged 5 wickets in the match to take his tally of wickets to 492, sitting on top of the list with 108 wickets more than what Broad has in his kitty. “It’s very special, he’s a hero of mine and gave me my Test cap. Very special to be stood by him now. They add up pretty quickly, there have been some great memories. But you remember the matches you win, not the wickets you take. It’s a very special day today with the family, but it’s the series wins you remember,” an elated Broad said after England clinched victory. Brilliant batting from Joe Root and Alastair Cook helped England post a mammoth 514 for 8 decl. in the first innings. The English bowlers then came into play, bundling West Indies for 168. England asked the visitors to follow on just to bowl them out for an even low score of 137 to register victory by an innings and 209 runs. The hosts now lead the three-match series 1-0. As England play their next match, Broad will be on hat-trick as he bagged wickets on successive deliveries of his last over in the match.
