India might be celebrating at the Sri Lanka shores after their historic ODI series whitewash, Sunil Gavaskar seems to be miffed with the team management. In his column for The Times of India on Sunday ahead of the final ODI, Gavaskar was upset with ‘nice’ players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ajinkya Rahane and Yuzvendra Chahal for not making into the playing XI in the four matches that have been played. Gavaskar mentioned that flashy hairstyles and tattoos play important role to find a spot in the playing XI. Referring to the likes of Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli, Gavaskar mentioned, “Maybe the players should start getting a different hair style and somebody art done too to get picked in the team.”

Rahane, who was the top-scorer in the West Indies ODI series, made way for KL Rahul, something that did not make Gavaskar happy: “Rahul got yet another chance while the top scorer of the just-concluded ODI series in the West Indies — Ajinkya Rahane — sat out once again. After the magnificent partnership between Rohit Sharma and skipper Kohli had been broken, it was expected that Rahul would come in to bat. He would have had time to settle down and get his eye in. Instead it was Hardik Pandya who was sent in earlier.”

However, Gavaskar did not shy away from praising Team India’s efforts in the series, especially their bowling: “Yes, it’s not the greatest opposition in the world but while their bowling is definitely well below international standards, their batting line-up has got some class players. That these batsmen have been strangled and not allowed to break free on batting friendly pitches is a credit to the Indian bowlers, who have been relentless and have not given any quarter to the beleaguered Lankans.”
