Shikhar Dhawan-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will aim to get their act together and register their first win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 tournament, when they take on an inconsistent Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the 12th match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
While Sunrisers Hyderabad have lost both their matches so far in this IPL, the Delhi Daredevils have been inconsistent with two losses and a win from their first three matches in the tournament. Delhi would be hoping to build on the winning momentum, as their captain Kevin Pietersen is likely to play his first match of the tournament.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have enough firepower in their ranks that can pummel the best of the Twenty20 sides on their day. The presence of the three most explosive batsmen in world cricket – Dhawan, Aaron Finch and David Warner makes their case strong and in the bowling department, they have the likes of Dale Steyn, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Amit Mishra.
In Darren Sammy, they have one of the most destructive lower-order batsman, but the worry for the Sunrisers have been that they haven’t attained the momentum so far in the tournament. While in the first match against Rajasthan their batsmen failed to put up a strong total, in the second game they did not have an answer for Kings XI Punjab’s stunning batting display.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad will have to fire on all cylinders as Delhi Daredevils have started to pick up after a slugging start to the tournament. Delhi opened the tournament with an annihilated defeat to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, but in the second game they bounced back well to trump the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Pietersen suffered a finger injury at the start of the tournament and thus missed the first three games, but he is recovering fast and there is a possibility that the maverick batsman gets a game after a long wait. However, if Pietersen does make a comeback, it will be interesting to see how he soaks in the pressure as he has not played competitive cricket since a very long time.
Delhi have relied heavily on Dinesh Karthik and JP Duminy to score the bulk of the runs for them. If at all Pietersen returns, it will be a major boost to their chances.
The bowlers have been disciplined enough, but the spin department is one wherein Delhi have been found wanting. Both Shahbaz Nadeem and Duminy have failed to make a mark and this would be one area the explosive SRH batsmen would like to exploit.
