Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Manoj Tiwary named captain of 16-member East Zone squad
The squad has five players each from East Zone table-toppers Bengal and bottom-placed side Jharkhand, who finished last with four losses from as many matches.
Manoj Tiwary may not have set the stage on fire with his bat during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy’s East Zone league matches, but on Sunday, he was named captain of the 16-member East Zone squad for the all-India Inter-Zonal Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to be held in Mumbai from February 12, as reported by PTI. Tiwary managed scores of 4, 1 and 39 in the recently-concluded inter-state East Zone T20 league games playing for Bengal. Before that, he had scores of 12 and 7 to show for while playing for Rest of India (ROI) in the Irani Cup. The selectors indeed have sprung a surprise by naming him as the skipper.
Tiwary also got the nod as former India captain MS Dhoni opted out of the tournament. Jharkhand’s Saurabh Tiwary was named as his deputy while India U-19 skipper during the U-19 World Cup 2016, Ishan Kishan was picked up as the wicketkeeper. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was not named in the 16-member squad, but he was named among the three standbys along with Suryakant Pradhan and Pramod Chandila. The squad has five players each from East Zone table-toppers Bengal and bottom-placed side Jharkhand, who finished last with four losses from as many matches.
Apart from Tiwary, the other four players from Bengal who made it to the squad were Shreevats Goswami, Writtick Chatterjee, Ashoke Dinda and Sayan Ghosh. Those from Jharkhand to make it to the team apart from Saurabh Tiwary and Kishan were Virat Singh, Ishank Jaggi and Shahbaz Nadeem. From Assam, K B Arun Kartik, Pritam Das and Amit Verma made it to the squad, while Odisha captain Biplab Samantary and Dhiraj Singh made it to the squad. Abhijit Sarkar was the only player from Tripura to get picked in the squad.
The selection meeting was convened by former India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly with members of the zonal board — Arup Bhattacharya (Bengal), Debashish Mohanty (Odisha), Ashish Sinha (Jharkhand), Manimoy Roy (Tripura) and Subhrajit Saikia (Assam).
