Aaron Finch and Jason Roy entertained a capacity Oval crowd in the London Derby between Surrey and rivals Middlesex in the T20 blast Friday evening when they blitzed through for a 194-run opening stand in 13.5 overs. Surrey were chasing a substantial 222 in 20 overs but Finch and Roy were in no mood to bow down and they launched a magnificent counter attack. They scored an incredible 98 in the initial six-over powerplay alone.

Finch scored 117* off 52 balls and Roy got out for 84 off 37 balls. Finch raised his first fifty in 16 balls which is a Surrey record. Roy also raced to his fifty in 24 balls.

Earlier, Paul Stirling rattled a 58-ball 109 to take Middlesex to 221/5 which is their joint highest score in T20s equalling 221/2 which they set against Sussex at Hove in 2015.

However, Stirling’s knock was overshadowed as Finch and Roy went on the attack and took the game away from the grasp of Middlesex. Such was the openers’ assault that Surrey won with an astonishing four overs to spare.

It was Surrey’s fourth win from eight South Group games, but Middlesex’s seventh defeat from nine.

Brief Scores:

Surrey 222 for 1 (Finch 117*, Roy 84) beat Middlesex 221 for 5 (Stirling 109) by nine wickets
