Titans lose the encounter against Trinidad and Tobago after rain interrupts play and they fall six runs short of the target, according to Duckworth-Lewis method
Farhaan Behardien lost his wicket in trying to slog sweep Sunil Narine. In the process, it resulted in Titans losing the momentum. Narine took good advantage of Titans’ mess as David Wiese failed to read the wrong one and ended up edging the delivery to slips.
Titans 135/4 | Overs 15 | Behardien 28* de Villiers 18*OUT! van der Merwe 42 (22) and Rudolph 7 (9)
Trinidad and Tobago found an unlikely hero in their line-up as part-time medium pacer Lendl Simmons struck twice in two deliveries to reduce them to 88 for four.
Titans batsmen didn’t seem to enjoy the slow bowling of the spinners and medium pacers. They found it tough to core boundaries.
It was AB de Villiers who ended their run drought with a smashing six over the deep mid-wicket boundary off Sunil Narine’s third over. Farhan Behardien too joined the act as he hit Emrit for two straight sixes in the 15th over.
Titans 87/2 | Overs 10 | van der Merwe 3* Rudolph 30*OUT! Davids 42 (22) and Kuhn 7 (9)
Rayad Emrit dismisses the dangerous looking Henry Davids as the Titans batsman misses a wild slog. The dismissal of Davids also allowed Denesh Ramdin to bring back Samuel Badree, after he had gone for 22 runs in his first over, into the attack.
His return spell is much better as he bowls a tight line and gives away just four runs off the eighth over. Titans’ run-rate dropped following the wicket of their skipper.
Trinidad and Tobago slowed down the pace of the match with a medium pacer and a spinner operating from either ends.
In a bid to up the run-rate, Hieno Kuhn edged a slog towards the on-side and was safely taken by the fielder stationed at mid-wicket.
Titans 49/0 | Overs 5 | Davids 35* Rudolph 13*
Titans got off to a good start as Henry Davids and Jacques Rudolph didn’t hold back on their attack. Rudolph was at his elegant best caressing the ball through the off-side. Henry Davids, too, looked at ease while playing his shots. To the fortune of the Titans, even inside edges raced away to the boundary fence.
The aggressive batting of the Titans forced Denesh Ramdin to use his trump card Sunil Narine as early as the fourth over. The move works as Narine shows his class beating the bat more often than not.
Trinidad and Tobago 188/6 | Overs 20 | Mohammed 1* Narine 8* OUT! Pooran 11 (10), Bavo 63 (44), Ramdin 6 (4) and Stewart 23 (15)
Navin Stewart was promoted up the order with a view to up the scoring rate after Trinidad and Tobago lost the wicket of Nicolas Pooran off the first ball of the 16th over.
The move worked as Stewart looked in good touch to muscle the ball away. However, in a bid to take Trinidad and Tobago past the 200-run mark, Darren Bravo tried to play a wild slog and lost his wicket to Marchant de Lange.
Titans did a fine job of restricting Trinidad and Tobago from scoring freely in the final overs. Morne Morkel, especially came back well to trouble the batsmen towards the end. He gave away just four runs and picked up a wicket off the 19th over.
Realising that both the left-handers were well set at the crease, spinners and seamers started bowling yorkers, forcing the batsmen to dig in to score runs. The 11th over yielded just one run.
However, Darren Bravo took the attack on Rowan Richards who came out to bowl the next over. Against the run of play Evin Lewis tried to whack a full-toss, but wasn’t timed well and it went high up in the air.
Nonetheless, it took a spectacular effort from Rowan Richards to pouch the catch and end the 110-run partnership and Lewis’s brilliant 35-ball 70- run effort.
The promising young Nicolas Pooran showed glimpses of his talent that has been the talking point in his country.
Poor bowling by Titans isn’t helping their cause.
Trinidad and Tobago 99/1 | Overs 10 | Lewis 68* Bravo 26*
By the sixth over, Trinidad and Tobago were in complete command of the innings with 59 on the board for the loss of just one wicket.
Soon after the Powerplay got over, skipper Henry Davids introduced himself into the attack. However, he was first carted for a six straight down the ground and later a sweep for a boundary which brought up Lewis’s fifty in just 21 balls.
Meanwhile, Bravo took a more cautious approach passing on the strike to his more attacking partner. Wiese maintained a tight length to strangle Bravo’s natural flow of bat which resulted in three consecutive dot deliveries in eight over, which prompted the left-hander to break the shackles and slam a boundary down the ground.
Meanwhile, Evin Lewis continued to strike sixes at will.
Trinidad and Tobago 48/1 | Overs 5 | Lewis 34* Bravo 12* OUT! 4/1 (Simmons 0 (7) | Overs 1.4)
The conditions at Ahmedabad offered good swing to the pacers. With Morne Morkel using it to his advantage by mixing the out-swingers with the in-coming deliveries, he managed to bowl a maiden over first up.
The bounce generated by Morkel and Marchant de Lange too started troubling the batsmen. However, it was a ball that kept low which resulted in Llendl Simmon’s dismissal. The opener perished after trying to play a pull shot and in return ended up inside edging the ball to the stumps.
After an extremely slow start, Evin Lewis cut loose in the third over and smashed a boundary and two massive six off Morkel’s bowling.
Bravo followed suit in the next over as he took on de Lange. He started the fourth over with an uppish drive over extra cover for a boundary. Bravo played two more exquisite square drives in the over which earned him a boundary each time.
Rowan Richard’s first over too was expensive as Trinidad and Tobago scored 14 runs.
