In the third match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2017, Chepauk Super Gillies outplayed VB Thiruvallur Veerans by 6 wickets to kick start their campaign in style. Gopinath’s 54 not out and wicketkeeper-batsman S Karthik’s 42 laid the foundation of an easy win after bowlers did their job. Gillies, in pursuit of 127, got over the line with 9 balls to spare. In this way, they have joined TUTI Patriots and Lyca Kovia Kings to have commenced TNPL 2 season with victory in their first game.
Chasing 127, Gillies never looked out of control as Gopinath’s fifty kept the opposition at bay. They lost Thaliavan Sargunam early, but a 74-run stand between Gopinath and Karthik gave them a fitting platform. The partnership was a brisk one and sealed the deal for the side. The finishing work was provided by Sathiamoorthy Saravanan who contributed with a quick cameo. Gillies lost few wickets in the end, but the writing was on the wall for Veerans.
Nonetheless, the real architects of Gillies’ victory were their bowlers.
Earlier, Veerans opted to bat. However, they got off to a precarious start as Hari Nishanth lost his wicket for no score. They were reduced to 50 for 3, but opener NS Chaturved’s 35 added runs on the board. Apart from him, only Malolan Rangarajan managed 27 and Abhishek Tanwar’s 25 not out propelled the team score to 126 for 7 in 20 overs. They were outdone by skipper Rajagopal Sathish’s opening spell. He finished with 3 for 17 and was well supported by Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore’s 2-for. Veerans’ innings never picked up and were kept on the mat courtesy regular breakthroughs and disciplined bowling efforts.
