The ball was pink and the conditions were seamer-friendly. In all probability the bowlers had the upper hand. All they had to do was pitch in the right areas, and batters will walk back one after the other. However, Alastair Cook had a different plan. He went on to score a splendid 243 against a fallible West Indies. Despite losing his new opening partner Mark Stoneman early, Cook kept his cool and played according to the merit of the ball, although most of them were bad. You will know. Here are the highlights:

Cook was rightly adjudged Man of the Match. This was his 4th double-hundred, helping him jump to the 6th spot in ICC Test Rankings for batsmen. With this spectacular performance, Cook is now 4,353 runs away from Sachin Tendulkar’s magnificent tally of 15,921 runs in the longest format. He is only 32, and we cannot overlook the fact that he may surpass the record that we once thought was unbreakable. Whether he will or will not, is a question only time will tell. Until then, enjoy the delirious batting display.

Trivia alert: Cook scored a century on his Test debut and also his day-night Test debut.
