Angelo Mathews was dismissed for a fighting 64 off 92 balls on Day One of the first Test between Sri Lanka and India at Galle on Wednesday. Mathews — playing his 50th Test — came in to bat at 27 for 3 and had to see his team struggle to reach 60 for 5 at lunch. He then put on 79 with Dinesh Chandimal before falling to a tremendous catch by Rohit Sharma as Ravichandran Ashwin took his fourth wicket. Sri Lanka were helped by two dropped catches, the later of Chandimal, but Ashwin ensured that India remained firmly on top. Read why Rohit Sharma’s catch is one of the best in history

Earlier, India dominated Sri Lanka in the morning session as Ashwin snared 3 for 15 before lunch while Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron took one wicket each. Sri Lanka were in dire straits at 65 for 5 at lunch. Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal were the unbeaten batsmen at lunch as India had the Lankan batsmen firmly on the back foot. Mathews was unbeaten on 26, but only one other batsman even got to double figures. Ishant was tight with the new ball, getting impressive carry from the start. He bowled seven overs for as many runs and took a wicket as well. Aaron was a bit wayward at the start but came back well to take a wicket also. Dimuth Karunaratne was the first man to go, edging an Ishant short ball to Ajinkya Rahane at gully for 9. Two balls later, Aaron had Kaushal Silva caught by Shikhar Dhawan at slip for 5.
