Virat Kohli confirmed that he had approached former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori regarding taking up the role of India’s national coach. According to Royal Challengers Bangalore’s skipper Kolhi, he had the conversation with Vettori regarding the coach’s role “a while back.” The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been in a dilemma regarding India’s head coach after Ravi Shastri’s contract as India’s team Director ended following the end of ICC World T20 2016. With India’s first international assignment after the Indian premier League (IPL) 2016 is the tour of Zimbabwe next month, BCCI will have to sign a head coach before that. According to Times of India, Kohli at a recent promotional event for RCB spoke about talking to Vettori about taking up India’s coach’s role. “I don’t see it as a controversy at all. All these things do come up in a scenario when you have to appoint someone (coach). I don’t know how it has come out now. I spoke to him a while back. We have spoken to a few other people as well and everyone knows about it,“ said Kohli.
However, the Indian Test skipper refused to reveal the names of the other contenders as he cheekily replied, “You guys seem to know more about it, so I will wait for your (media) verdict on that.“ READ: Kohli recommends Vettori’s name for India’s national coach
Nevertheless, Kohli’s recommendation of Vettori for India’s national coach was not surprising seeing the respect and relationship the duo share in their captain-coach partnership in RCB. “I was lucky to have a good relationship with Virat prior to becoming coach. Over the last two years I have got to know Virat very well and I believe we form a complementary partnership,” Vettori had said sometime back.
