The Wankhede stadium that has chanted ‘Sachin, Sachin’ since the early nineties saw mix of emotions on Sunday. It was Virat Kohli’s 200th ODI. Kohli made this special milestone count with a century. His 31st century took him closer to Tendulkar’s record of 49 tons, going past Ricky Ponting’s 30 ODI centuries.
The chants of ‘Kohli, Kohli’ found no end until he was dismissed for 121. During his stay, MS Dhoni too joined the crease with Kohli and built 57-run stand with him. The chants then saw a drift from ‘Kohli, Kohli’ to ‘Dhoni, Dhoni.’
Of course, Dhoni has special memories with Wankhede stadium. He scored the winning six during the final of 2011 World Cup against Sri Lanka, crowing them as the World Champions.
Although Kohli’s century went in vain, courtesy Tom Latham and Ross Taylor’s gritty partnership, he was felicitated by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for completing this personal milestone. Kohli was felicitated post the first ODI.
MCA will also witness another special milestone in domestic cricket. Ranji Trophy will see its 500th match being played on November 9.
Several former Mumbai players and captains will be felicitated in Mumbai on the eve of the clash. Mumbai will face Baroda in Group C at the Wankhede Stadium from November 9.
