Before the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 could go underway, there seems to be trouble brewing between the Indian cricketers and head coach Anil Kumble. As known already, Kumble’s contract as Team India’s head coach ends after the Champions Trophy and BCCI are already in hunt for a new coach. However, in what comes as shocking news, the cricketers are apparently unhappy with Kumble’s overbearing attitude. They have even complained about the same to Committee of Administrators (CoA). Players are unhappy that there is no freedom in the dressing room. It appears that Kumble does not enjoy the confidence of the players. Under Kumble’s guidance, India has won five successive series as well as enjoyed limited-overs victories against New Zealand and England. BCCI initiated the search for a new head coach as the board was unhappy with Kumble as well on salary negotiation for players with CoA. Since the issue is very fragile, the CoA are expected to work on the situation cautiously especially with the Champions Trophy round the corner. This situation is not new for the Indian cricketers or for the BCCI as a matter of fact. When Greg Chappell was the head coach of India, there was unrest in the camp after his spat with the then skipper Sourav Ganguly and also other senior cricketers.
CoA is expected to meet the Big 3 – VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly to discuss the issue in length. “With the CoA not involved in the day-to-day working of the team, the responsibility of naming the new head coach is entrusted to the three-member panel. Neither the CoA not the board officials will be part of this process,” a source was reported as saying in Times of India.
As per the present situation, Virender Sehwag has been asked to apply for the role. Sources also say that Tom Moody could also be in contention as India’s head coach.
