Virat Kohli would have resigned if not Anil Kumble: Reports
While many were shocked, given the success the team achieved during Kumble’s tenure, it is now reported that had Kumble not stepped down from the post, it was Kohli, who was ready to pay the price and give up his captaincy.
No wonder the most-discussed topic amongst the Indian cricket fans currently is the resignation of Anil Kumble from the position of Team India’s head coach. The former Indian cricketer made it clear in his leaving note that all was not well between him and team’s captain Virat Kohli and it is that ‘untenable’ relationship between the duo that cost India their coach. While many were shocked, given the success the team achieved during Kumble’s tenure, it is now reported that had Kumble not stepped down from the post, it was Kohli, who was ready to pay the price and give up his captaincy. No Team India player was in favour of Anil Kumble: Sources
According to The Telegraph, a top BCCI official revealed, “Kohli had been adamant that Kumble couldn’t continue as the head coach and that the board needed to look for a replacement. That, it seems, was communicated to the Committee of Administrators’ chief Vinod Rai, besides top officials of the Board and, of course, the CAC. Had the board gone ahead and implemented Sachin, Sourav and Laxman’s recommendation, then Kohli would almost surely have resigned,”
BCCI is reported to have approached former Team Director Ravi Shastri for the post. However, Shastri responded with a demand to receive assurance of the job and denied to join the other applicants. Shastri’s demand will have to pass through the CAC for final approval. BCCI have also sent out a message asking for more applicants as they are not happy with the response they received. The current applicants include Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody and Richard Pybus amongst others.
