With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) delaying the announcement of naming the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2017, the suspense over the BCCI-ICC drama is building up. In addition, the speculation over the Indian squad is intensifying with other former cricketers recently naming their top XI picks for the tournament. After former Australian captain Michael Clarke, India’s very own swashbuckling former opener Virender Sehwag has announced his squad for the event. Unlike Clarke, Sehwag has gone for the no nonsense approach while selecting his team. India, defending champions, will begin their campaign against archrivals Pakistan on June 4. According to a report published in dainikbhaskar.com, Sehwag has chosen Rohit Sharma and Ajikya Rahane as the side’s openers and missing out are: in-form Shikhar Dhawan and Gautam Gambhir. KL Rahul sadly misses out to due to a shoulder injury. Dhawan was adjudged the Man of the Tournament in the 2013 edition and has been brilliant for India in ICC tournaments. Therefore, Sehwag’s decision to exclude Dhawan comes as a surprise.
Coming in at No.3 will be India’ skipper Virat Kohli followed by Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. Yuvraj in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has struggled to find form, while Dhoni is getting his into his groove. Sehwag has also included one-T20I old Rishabh Pant and Kedar Jadhav while he ignored Manish Pandey. Clarke’s side meanwhile included Pandey. (Also Read: Clarke’s team)
All-rounding duties will fall on Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja .Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav ,Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah will be spearheading the fast bowling attack while Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal get the nod ahead other spinners.
There are quite a few notable misses considering their form in IPL . Amit Mishra, Kuldeep Yadav and Robin Uthappa have been ignored by Sehwag.
