Virender Sehwag, the man who redefined batting and wishing fellow cricketers on Twitter came up with another gem on Sunday morning. September 25, marks the birthday of legendary spinner and former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi. The Delhi stalwart, who represented India from 1967 to 1979, turns 70 today. Sehwag through his tweet, paid rich tribute to left-arm spin bowler, who led India in 22 Tests and is known for his outspoken and straightforward nature. Bedi, who boasts a very good record in international cricket, is regarded as one of the finest cricketers to have represented India.

The purists loved the smoothness in Bedi’s action. Arunabha Sengupta writes in Bedi’s CricketCountry bio, “He seemed to have the ball on a string — so incredible was his control of flight and loop. He could make the ball hold or hurry almost at will as it traversed the winding arcs in air. Jim Laker — who in his lifetime had seen his fair share of bowlers — described his idea of heaven as Ray Lindwall bowling from one end and Bishan Singh Bedi from the other!” Sehwag hailed the action as, “a man who did not bowl, but did poetry instead.” Throwing praise at his skills of deception, Sehwag further added, “A man who cheated batsmen with a cherry in hand.”

Bedi played in 67 Tests and claimed 266 wickets at 28.71. He was a part of the spin quartet that also comprised of EAS Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and S Venkataraghavan, and was the most successful out of them.

Bedi’s bowling average is even better than India’s most successful spinner Anil Kumble. Adding to this is his impeccable economy rate of 2.14. Even Kumble wished Bedi on this occasion and tweeted:

Sehwag is currently in England, where he played a charity match and later paid a visit to the Arsenal headquarters. May he keep entertaining us with his fabulous tweets.
