Well the honeymoon really started even before Wasim Akram officially tied the knot with his Australian fiance Shaniera Thompson at a hush-hush ceremony in Lahore last October (after Muslim clerics had chided him for “living in sin”), and by the looks of it, it’s still far from over.
Akram took off with his new wife and both his sons from his previous marriage for a nearly month long vacation in Australia where he brought in the New Year with his in-laws at their home on the Mornington Peninsula.
It’s been a culturally enlightening period for both of them. While Akram seems delighted with a truly intimate discovery of Australia — the family enjoyed a 5-day sailing trip at Lakes Entrance in Victoria, taking in the stunning wildlife and scenery — Shaniera has been diligently learning Urdu and devoting much energy in bonding with 17-year-old Taimoor and 12-year-old Akbar.
Though there had been much skepticism about a 30-something cosmopolitan PR consultant from Australia adjusting to life in conservative Pakistan, Shaniera had earlier converted to Islam and besides studying her new religion, is apparently now also impressing everyone with her culinary skills — she’s been personally cooking traditional Pakistani meals for Wasim’s family and friends.
Wasn’t that always the perfect recipe for a happy married life?
