The first Test between the West Indies and New Zealand at Kingston, Jamaica holds a lot of value for the sheer occasion it is in the careers of Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. For the former, this is his 100th Test in national colours, and for the evergreen Chanderpaul, he has now lasted for more than two decades in the gentleman’s game. But after the first day’s proceedings, it seems the hosts weren’t really buoyed by the occasion, as the visiting team ended Day One on top, at 240 for the loss of just two wickets. Their in-for,m No. 3, Kane Williamson enjoyed a feast of a day as he brought up another Test ton, and also crossed the 2000-run mark barrier in Test cricket. He was ably supported by Tom Latham, and currently batting alongside him, Ross Taylor. Catch the live blog of the match here

The West Indians will have to come back hard with the second day’s play, or expect to be under the pressure of a huge first innings total when they come out to bat second in the match.
