Thats the end of the day’s play and New Zealand end the day’s play, well poised. Despite losing two early wickets, the Kiwis lead by 260 and need to bat horribly to lose from here. West Indies, meanwhile need a monumental effort from their bowlers.

Its another strike for West Indies and its through Kemar Roach. For the second time in the Test match, Kane Williamson pays the price for erring with chosing the wrong ball to leave. The ball crashes on the off-stump and nightwatchman Ish Sodhi walks in.
OUT!K Williamson b Roach 2(3)

New Zealand chose to bat and boy, oh boy! Peter Fulton’s nightmare continues! The Kiwi batsman chases a wide delivery and gets an edge and Denesh Ramdin takes a good catch, diving to his right.
OUT! P Fulton c Ramdin b Taylor 0(2)

Shillingord’s breezy stay at the crease is ended by Tim Southee, who takes his fourth wicket. After Chanderpaul cracked three fours to the fence of Boult, it takes only two balls for Southee to get a nick of the tail-ender’s bat.
OUT! S Shillingford c Watling b Southee 14(21)

Shillingford is not holding back and is going for the big hits. New Zealand continue to attack with men surrounding the bat though. Chanderpaul is playing a typical gritty knock of his and is trying everything that he can to get close to the follow-on score, which is 309.

Suliemann Benn is dismissed a after a rather entertaining stay at the crease. Going after the bowling from ball one, its the lanky West Indian’s high risk approach that defeats him and his clean bowled. The flight on Mark Craig’s ball defeats him and the New Zealand spinner takes his fourth wicket.
OUT! S Benn b Craig 17(21)

The tail is hardly putting a fight and wickets are tumbling in quick succession. Taylor plays a flashy drive and Brendon McCullum leans forward and takes a smart catch, inches off the ground. Trent Boult gets his first wicket of the match.
OUT!J Taylor c McCullum b Boult 7(12)

Post Tea session under way and Its a familiar tale for West Indies as Chanderpaul reaches yet another half-century. Mark Craig gets his third wicket as Roach is unable to keep the ball down and edges the ball to Peter Fulton at slip.
OUT!K Roach c Fulton b Craig 4(10)

Slow delivery does the trick for Southee and the New Zealand pacer takes his third wicket of the session. Its a clever slow ball with a little bit of bounce and Ramdin can only clip the ball to skipper BJ Watling
D Ramdin c Watling b Southee 39(77)

Ramdin continues to be on the attack and is looking for quick runs. Chanderpaul is being well…vintage Chanderpaul — frustrating the bowlers. New Zealand know this will be a key breakthrough as it will expose their tail. The partnership has crossed 50 and the duo have got their eye in.

Ramdin is not holding back and is looking for scoring opportunities. Chanderpaul has dropped anchor.

The double breakthrough has broken the West Indies back. New skipper Denesh Ramdin and old warhorse Shivnarine Chanderpaul have dropped anchor but McCullum’s men are relentless and look every inch like scalping another wicket.

Welcome back for the pot-lunch session on Day Three of the 1st Test. Gayle and Chanderpaul are taking their time early on in this session. They are the most experienced batsmen. Oh Wait! Tim Southee’s hardwork since morning finally pays off. He gets the big wicket of Chris Gayle. Another one leaving Gayle, and this time he edges it.
Marlon Samuels is the new man in now. With the ball starting to reverse, it will be interesting to see how Samuels goes about his business. And Oh West Indies! Samuels is trapped dead in front of the stumps by Southee now. He lasts for just two balls. So the late movement finally reaping the rewards for Southee.
OUT! C Gayle 64(125), M Samuels 0(2)

So that’s lunch on Day Three. New Zealand will be mighty impressed with their performance with the ball so far. All their bowlers have bowled quite beautifully so far. Finally the rewards came to the spinners. But one can’t overlook the performance of the pacers as well. Chris Gayle has reached his fifty and is forging a strong partnership with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, but New Zealand have won another session in this Test match, this time thanks to their spinners; Mark Craig and Ish Sodhi.

Finally some signs of sunlight for the home team as their star opener, Chris Gayle reaches his fifty. Gayle has gradually got better in this innings so far, and is now getting into his trademark zone. He is getting the boundaries now. New Zealand will be eagerly wanting his wicket before he hurts them even more. Moreover, his record against the Kiwis in Tests is quite remarkable.

All that pressure from the New Zealand bowlers finally pays off. Mark Craig, the debut spinner claims for the wickets of Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards in the same over. First he straps Powell in front of the middle stump. The umpire had no hesitation in raising the finger. Powell asks Gayle is he should review it, Gayle says no. Then Kirk Edwards, who stayed for just two balls in the middle. Gets a thick outside edge, and Ross Taylor takes a good diving catch to his right.
Oh Wait! Even Darren Bravo departs now. In the very next over, Ish Sodhi gets the wicket of Bravo who hands the bowler an easy return catch. It’s all falling apart for the West Indies sullenly.
OUT! K Powell 28(76), K Edwards 0(2), D Bravo 0(6)

The exit of Southee and Boult from the attack has slightly released the pressure and eased the nerves for Gayle and Powell. While they will consider themselves lucky to be still there, they will also be aware of the fact that they have seen off a dangerous period of play, and now should be able to build a strong partnership. New Zealand have now introduced spin for the first time in the day in the form of Mark Craig. Craig has already shown signs of getting some good purchase from this pitch. Yesterday, we had seen Benn and Shillingford being the only successful bowlers for the West Indies.Should be interesting to see if Craig and Ish Sodhi can do something similar for the Kiwis on this rather flat track.

The West Indies openers are finding it very difficult so far to even middle the ball. Gayle, in particular, will consider himself very lucky to be still out there in the middle. Southee has missed his edge at least 25-30 times already in this session. He has consistently moved the ball away from Gayle, and the West Indian has been completely at sea so far.
Powell, on the other hand, has looked reasonably more comfortable against Trent Boult. Both the bowlers have hardly given away anything so far, which has meant that we have mostly witnessed Southtee to Gayle and Boult to Powell so far. Just one boundary since play commenced today. Says something.

The New Zealand pacers; Tim Southee and Trent Boult are straightaway asking a few questions of Chris Gayle and Kieran Powell on Day Three morning. Southee against Gayle especially has been a probing contest so far. He has got the ball top move away from Gayle, and has pitched it in the right areas so far, asking all sorts of questions. Gayle has looked to play at most of them, and has missed almost all by a whisker.
Boult on the other hand almost yorked Powell with his second ball of the day. He is bowling with some appreciable pace as well. Gayle and Powell have managed to score just two runs so far from the first five overs of the morning.
