Rather than Benn shielding Brathwaite, it was the other way around towards the end of the day’s play. Brathwaite was facing most of the deliveries in an over before heading to the other end to take strike at the start of a new one. Stumps were called as West Indies finished at six for one. They trail New Zealand by 215 runs. That is it from us for now. Join us again for all the action on Day Two. Have a good day.
Chris Gayle and Kraigg Brathwaite walk out to open the innings for West Indies. Trent Boult will begin proceedings for New Zealand. Tim Southee shares the new ball with Boult. Gayle has been bowled by a brilliant delivery from Boult. He bowled a full and out-swinging delivery to the left-hander. Gayle did not move his feet and missed the ball as it hit off-stump. Sulieman Benn has come out to bat as night-watchman.
OUT! Gayle 1(11)

Taylor and Boult are batting very slowly. Benn then drifts one in and Boult misses as the ball hits his pads. The players appeal and the umpire says ‘out’. Boult reviews the decision, but the third umpire sees no reason to change the on-field umpire’s decision. New Zealand have been bowled out for 221 in their first innings. It was a total batting collapse for New Zealand as they were at 120 for one at one stage.
OUT! Boult 1(12)
Jerome continues his excellent spell of bowling as he dismisses Ish Sodhi for a 10-ball duck. He bowled an out-swinging good length delivery and Sodhi edged the ball to Gayle at first slip. Tim Southee is the next batsman in and he gets of the mark with a chip back over Jerome for two runs. Southee then flashes one past backward-point for a four. In the 71st over, Benn struck as he dismissed Southee LBW for 10. The ball pitched on off-stump and straightened. Southee missed and the ball hit him on the pads. The players appealed and the umpire raised his finger. Southee reviewed the decision, but to no avail. Mark Craig was the next batsman in. He got of the mark with a slash off Gabriel over gully for a four. Gabriel then bowled a short delivery angling away from Craig. The batsman could only edge the ball to Darren Bravo at second slip. Trent Boult is the last batsman in.
OUT! Sodhi 0(10), Southee 10(14), Craig 4(7)
Jerome Taylor angles one into Ross Taylor and the batsman flicks the ball behind square on the leg side to get his sixth four. Jerome bowled a short and wide delivery and Neesham flashed at it. He only edged the ball to Gayle at first slip. Jerome then got the wicket of next batsman BJ Watling quickly. He bowled a full delivery outside off-stump and Watling edged it to Ramdin behind the wickets. That has given Jerome his 250th wicket in First-Class cricket.
OUT! Neesham 15(25), Watling 0(8)
Welcome back. Benn gets the wicket of McCullum on the second ball after tea. He slides one in from round the wicket and McCullum misses with a forward defensive push. The players appeal and the umpire does not raise his finger. Benn wants the review and replays show that the ball would have hit high on middle-stump. The decision is reversed and McCullum has to go back to the dressing room. Jimmy Neesham is the next batsman in. he hits a four off Roach through mid-wicket. Taylor then gets back-to-back fours off Roach in the 58th over.
OUT! McCullum 4(6)
Taylor and McCullum survive till tea on Day One of the second Test against West Indies. That wicket of Latham has given West Indies a better position in the match. But New Zealand do have their two best and most experienced batsmen out on the field.
And another wicket — another set batsman departs. Kemar Roach gets the big wicket of Tom Latham. Suliamen Benn takes a good diving catch which was dying on him at gully. Latham would be disappointed to again lose his wicket in the 80s. His wicket now brings the captain to the centre — Brendon McCullum.
OUT! Latham 82(163)

And a wicket out of nowhere for West Indies. Gabriel bounced it outside Williamson’s off-stump, he went for the hook. Got a top edge, and fine-leg took an easy catch. This is an absolute gift for the West Indies who have otherwise been quite shoddy in the field. And especially for Gabriel, who never looked like getting a wicket.
OUT! K Williamson 42(100)

Latham and Williamson have nicely settled in now. They have brought up their second 100-run partnership in as many matches. Williamson is closing in on his 50, while Latham looks untroubled. West Indies desperately need to break this partnership now to create some inroads.

West Indies have started the post-lunch session with a spring in their step. They have now bowled five maiden overs on the trot, and Jerome Taylor has come very close to getting Latham out on a couple of occasions. Latham has looked a bit unsure in this span of play.

It’s lunch now at Port of Spain on Day 1. New Zealand have looked quite comfortable so far. No real demons in the pitch. Here’s the session report.

Latham reaches to fifty now. It’s been a good innings so far, laced with a few glorious boundaries on the leg side and down the ground. He seems to have carried on his form from the last Test. Meanwhile, Gabriel has looked really wayward so far. He has strayed in both line and length. This pitch seems to have nothing for the bowlers so far. Could be another long day in the sun for the home team.

Suliamen Benn’s spin has seemed harmless so far. Latham is strolling along towards another fifty. And the Kiwis are now slowly getting up their run-rate as well. The boundaries are coming. The partnership is closing in on the 50-run mark.

This is the crucial partnership for New Zealand — Latham and Williamson; their two in-form batsmen. Latham has looked quite positive so far. He has hit a few streaky fours past the slips, but seems to have the intent to play his strokes and not get into a shell. The West Indies pacers too have maintained a good line outside the off-stump which have invited the edges off Latham, but all of them have fallen short of the slips so far.

New Zealand search for an opening partner to Latham continues. After dragging his bat around for a while, Rutherford departs for a 22-ball three. Pitched up, Rutherford goes for it and is caught by Chris Gayle in the slips. Kane Williamson is the new batsman in. Four leg byes conceded by Taylor welcoming WIlliamson with one down the leg-side.
H Rutherford c Gayle b Taylor 3(22)

New Zealand openers still cautious. Rutherford has been more tentative. In the seventh over, he tried to play an expansive drive to a pitched up wide delivery, which indicates that he is itching to score freely. Roach has been a touch erratic spraying the ball well outside off.

Some swing on offer for Jerome Taylor. Spongy bounce on the wicket. The Kiwis have started off well. Fulton’s poor form has finally seen him being excluded from the team. Will be interesting to see whether Rutherford can make this count.

Hello and welcome to the live blog of the West Indies vs New Zealand second Test at Port of Spain. I am Abhijit Banare and I will be bringing the live updates of the match. The Kiwis will be high on confidence after dominating the hosts at Jamaica. Despite an impressive bowling performance in the second innings, the Windies were too far behind after conceding a huge first innings lead.

The West Indies batting has let them down in the last few Tests and it was no different story in the series opener. Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been the only consistent one while the rest have either squandered a good start or have just looked at sea against quality bowling.
