After dominating the bowlers world over with his destructive batting, Virender Sehwag announced retirement from the game last year. It must surely have given many of his contemporaries a huge sigh of relief, for they were spared of his wrath. But as it turned out, the ‘Nawab of Nazafgarh’ repackaged himself as the ‘Nawab of Twitter trolls’ and started tormenting his peers and other cricketers with his witty tweets. Such is the terror of his birthday tweets that many wish their birthday does not arrive at all, as Sehwag finds different funny ways of trolling cricketers on the important days of lives.

Ask Shoaib Akhtar, Ashish Nehra, Jacob Oram and they will tell you, what it feels like when Sehwag wishes you birthday in his inimitable style. However, for the first time perhaps, Sehwag got the taste of his own medicine, when he decided to wish former Indian cricketer and an all time great Bishan Singh Bedi on his birthday on Sunday.

Bedi, who is known for his outspoken behaviour, was never going to be an easy prey for Sehwag, and he learnt it soon. It all started with Sehwag’s tweet, where he mentioned one word which apparently did not go down well with the spin legend. He wrote: “Hpy Bdy to a man who did not bowl, but did poetry instead.A man who cheated batsmen with a cherry in hand”

What Sehwag meant was Bedi deceived the batsmen with his spin bowling. It is just that he used the word ‘cheated’ instead of deceiving, and Bedi was quick to correct it. He replied: “Thx Veeru..but just to clarify..I might’ve deceived batsmen in air or off wkt..but I never ‘cheated’ on Crkt ground..Cheers!”

Bedi, a veteran of 67 Tests, has often been considered as one of the best spinners of all time. His 266 wickets stand testimony to this statement. He was best known for being the master exponent of deception and variation. He perhaps did not appreciate the use of word ‘Cheated’ and quite immediately corrected Sehwag, his junior both at Delhi and India. The masterful spinner helped the dashing batsman understand the difference between ‘cheating’ and ‘deception’. And mind you, it all happened in the right spirit, or as they say, in the spirit of the game.
