Jofra Archer is a West Indian by nationality who plays the role of all rounder in current Big Bash League. He has taken 44 wickets in his 37 T20 matches. Archer was recently purchased by Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2018 at a price of INR 7.2 Crores.

Archer was born in Barbados but his father is a British citizen which makes him applicable to play for England in 2022( five year stay in UK to become a citizen). However with his current form he is eligible to play for West Indies much sooner.

Johnny Grave, the chief executive of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) believes that Archer will have a better career if he plays for West Indies than England as he may be given an opportunity sooner.

He’s West Indian according to my definition but I guess English cricket has always had a slightly unique definition of Englishness,” he says.

“He could play for the West Indies tomorrow and my personal view is that from a career point of view, he would have a better career playing for the West Indies. He’s obviously very grateful for what Sussex have done but maybe the next three months will make him reassess that.”

“In sporting terms, 2022 is a lifetime away and he knows that the only way he can play at the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 T20 World Cup is for the West Indies,” he added.

Grave also added that West Indies are not short of all-rounders but Archer’s addition to the squad will be a positive.

“We’re not sat here praying for Jofra, because we’ve got some very capable all-rounders here. We’re not lacking talent but clearly if Jofra continues to progress the way he has done then any international side would want him in and around their team.”

“Personally, I think it would be best for him and best for West Indies cricket if he played here.”
