West Indies Cricket Board has some good news for cricketers who have retainer contracts with them as they are set to receive increased compensation packages effective from October 1. This will include increase in annual retainer fees, sponsorship payments, match fees and captain’s allowances. The number of women cricketers who come under this radar will also be increased to 15 players which was 11 before the amendments. WICB’s expenses are set to increase, this amendment will cost them around $6,00,000 in the coming year. West Indies’ victorious captain Stafanie Taylor who has a stadium named after her has appreciated WICB’s gesture.

West Indies women team’s skipper Taylor told ESPNcricinfo, “I believe we are stepping in the right direction. England and Australia are the two top teams where women’s cricket is concerned and I think we can mirror what they are doing and get on their level,” Taylor said. “It’s good that the retainers and match fees have been increased and the girls love it. We hope that, as time goes by, more things will be improved.”

Not just the current captain but former captain Merissa Aguilleira too praised WICB’s move as she said, “An increase like this will only encourage [the team] to work harder and continue representing the people of the Caribbean to the best of (their) abilities.” This increment in remunerations has been a result from the talks between WICB and West Indies Player’s Association’s President, former player Wavell Hinds.

WICB CEO Michael Muirhead also feels that the packages offered were adequate, ” (Packages) serve as an additional incentive for the current set of women and as a drawing card to more women to be attracted to cricket.” Hinds too agreed with the decision as he termed it as ”well deserved”.
