Women’s T20 league to be discussed during IPL Governing Council meeting
As for the players’ regulation for men’s IPL 2018, the officials would be discussing if the team owners can retain the players or should all players be put to auction.
Since the conclusion of ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, women’s cricket popularity has been rising. There were even debates to have a female IPL T20 league in place. However, a close BCCI official shut the topic citing insufficient funds as the reason.
Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, in a meeting with BCCI, requested for more women tournaments and also build up an A team to give budding cricketers an opportunity. BCCI did take them into consideration. They recently hiked the wages of the women cricketers and even decided to come up with an A team soon.
India Women would also be soon playing T20I series against South Africa in January on the same venue as that of men on the same day.
To boost the morale of women cricketers further, the Governing Council (GC) meeting of the IPL in New Delhi will be discussing the possibility of women’s IPL as understood by The Times of India (TOI).
As mentioned report, the agenda of the meeting apart from discussing women’s IPL will be “IPL media rights ITT outcome, CSK legal opinion, Kochi settlement, player regulations 2018 onwards, Rajasthan Royals & Kings XI Punjab venues for the 2018 IPL, franchise owners’ meeting, release fee to overseas boards for players’ availability, player injury compensation.”
The formation of women’s IPL has been emphasised by Veda Krishnamurthy, Vanitha VR and Mamatha Maben through their interviews to CricketCountry. CoA panel member Diana Eduljee has been pushing BCCI for a women’s event.
The GC would be discussing the issue despite BCCI giving a red signal from their end. A BCCI official had said earlier, “It would be tough to find many big hitters in women’s cricket. There’s no point in launching it and failing in the process.”
As for the players’ regulation for men’s IPL 2018, the officials would be discussing if the team owners can retain the players or should all players be put to auction. The scenario gets all the more fun with the return of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).
