Kolkata Knight Riders made a strike towards the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014. They beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets at Hyderabad and have increased the gap between them in the IPL 2014 Points Table. Kolkata are on the fourth spot and Hyderabad would be on the fifth spot. There was a big change in this match as Hyderabad made Darren Sammy captain instead of Shikhar Dhawan. After winning the toss, Hyderabad batted first and could only score 142 for eight. This was due to some fine bowling by Umesh Yadav, who took three for 26. Even the spinners bowled well in tandem and gave away only 67 in their 11 overs. In reply, Robin Uthappa set the stage alive with a brisk 40 and put Kolkata on course. They did stutter a touch, but in the end Yusuf Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate helped them get there in the last over.
