A Test match which was otherwise heading to a dull draw under gloomy skies was lit up by an explosive batsman on one end and a defensive one on the other. Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid completed a 400-run opening stand on January 16, 2006 at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore in the first Test against Pakistan. The openers were just at the brink of breaking the record opening stand of 413 runs set by Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy in 1956 but fell three short when Sehwag was dismissed for 254 on the fifth morning (January 17). The record was eventually overhauled by South Africans Neil McKenzie and Graeme Smith against Bangladesh in 2008 sharing a stand of 415 runs.
