Ajay Ratra Biography
Ajay Ratra made history in 2002 when he became the youngest wicketkeeper to smash a Test ton. During the run-fest at Antigua, Ratra stitched a huge partnership with VVS Laxman to show that he had the patience to succeed. Additionally, he and Ridley Jacobs became the first pair of wicketkeepers to score hundreds in the same Test.
This came at a time when India were searching for a stable wicketkeeping option who could be effective on both sides of the stumps. A member of the under-19 World Cup winning side of 2000, Ratra made his ODI debut in early 2002 against England and held his spot with some confident performances behind the stumps.
Ratra made his Test debut at Port-of-Spain the same year, replacing Deep Dasgupta. It was a momentous occasion as India clinched victory at the venue after 26 years. Though he smashed a ton in only his third Test, he was not able to establish himself.
Though Rahul Dravid took over the gloves so that India could play the extra batsman, Ratra held onto his Test spot on the tour of England in 2002, but Parthiv Patel shot ahead of him after that sojourn. The Haryana-stumper never played for India again after that tour.
The road has been tough for Ratra, who comes from a humble background in Haryana. After his India days, he has been a traveller in domestic cricket, having played for Goa and Tripura.
