‘Tipo’ Morris has emerged as a dependable all-rounder for South Africa in limited-overs cricket in recent times. He is tall, fast, can hit the deck hard and consistently clock 140 kph; he can also use the long handle to devastating effect while batting.
Cricket was in his genes. His father Willie Morris played First-Class cricket for Northern Transvaal. A late starter, Chris Morris made his First-Class debut at the age of 22, but made a mark only a couple of seasons later: he finished 2011-12 as the leading wicket-taker in the domestic T20 competition, with 21 wickets at 12.67.
He was picked to play a T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe, but made his debut later that year against New Zealand in Durban. The same year, he also excelled in the now-defunct Champions League T20, which helped him earn an IPL contract in 2013 with Chennai Super Kings worth INR 3.30 crores, 31 times his base price.
Morris made his ODI debut next year and went on to play 2 Tests for South Africa, the same year when he earned a whopping INR 7-crore contract with Delhi Daredevils. At the same time he established a reputation of being a limited-overs specialist. However, he continued to do well in First-Class cricket as well, thus staying on the selectors’ radar for selection across formats.
