Kaushal Silva Biography
The talented gloveman Kaushal Silva made his First-Class debut as a teenager in 2001-02. In the late 2000s, he was picked for the Sri Lankan side, but with Kumar Sangakkara donning the gloves in ODIs and Prasanna Jayawardene holding fort in Tests (and Tillakaratne Dilshan and Dinesh Chandimal to fill in if required), he had to bide his time for his chances. Silva got his chance in 2011 against Pakistan in the UAE in a couple of Tests, but he couldn’t cement his spot.
However in 2013-14, he got a lifeline at the top when he was summoned to open the batting against Pakistan in UAE. Silva impressed with a few good scores and then went on to score his first Test hundred against Bangladesh in early 2014. It isn’t often that a wicketkeeper turns to opening the batting in Test cricket and he played in that role with Jayawardene doing the duties behind the stumps.
